This World Challenge program will be an exciting opportunity for a team of students to research, fund and lead their own month-long expedition to the fascinating country of Borneo.
The expedition will be preceded by 20 months of training and preparation. During this time, team members will learn about their destination and research the expedition objectives with the support of their School Program Manager and Expedition Program Manager from World Challenge. This full involvement will continue during the expedition itself when they will take on responsibility for leading the team, managing the budget, liaising with local guides and successfully achieving their objectives with the guidance of a World Challenge Leader. The whole program will teach and develop essential transferable life skills including financial management, leadership, teamwork, communication, organisation and decision making.
The cost of the World Challenge program is $6,400. A breakdown of these costs will be covered in more detail at the Parents’ Presentation. An integral part of the program incorporates the World Challenge Money Management program, which has been designed to introduce students to financial management and encourage them to take ownership of their expedition at an early stage. On average last year, Challengers raised 74% of their total program cost without parental financial support, through both individual and group efforts. The program will be explained in more detail at the Parents’ Presentation.
Borneo will offer the team a huge variety of objectives and challenges. Teams may go trekking in both Sabah and Sarawak. Sabah is home to the highest mountain in South East Asia - Mount Kinabalu, as well as the challenging and beautiful Mount Trus Madi. Treks in Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, are in the Kelabit Highlands, known as the heart of the Borneo jungle, or one of the many National Parks. Here you will also find the world’s oldest limestone caves as well as a wide variety of fascinating flora and fauna. The team may well find themselves trekking through villages where they will see local people and traditional longhouses.
A community phase is a key part in gaining a greater understanding of the culture of the people of this beautiful country. The majority of projects are based within small communities where Challengers live and work alongside the local people. At the end of the expedition the beautiful coastline of Borneo offers a welcoming environment to unwind or the team could visit one of the Orang Utan Sanctuaries!
Whatever they do in Borneo they will find it a rewarding and challenging experience. They will return as confident and motivated young adults, ready to tackle their next challenge in life, be it their final year of schooling, university, or embarking on their professional career.
