Dear Parents
Welcome to the 2016 School year, the Loreto Year of Felicity.
Mary Ward challenged us to “be cheerful, efficacious and loving”. The value of Felicity is both rich and meaningful for our students of all levels, for the cultivation and development of a felicitious person, and a person of deep inner self-acceptance and optimism, of joy, large-mindedness and wellbeing, starts from the earliest age. Our School Captains for 2016 Emma Wright-Smith and India Marks have met with their Year 12 Councillor group to develop a whole School theme based upon their understanding of Felicity. Yesterday, when we gathered all students together under the canopy of Winifred Square for our commencement Mass, the student theme for the Loreto Year of Felicity was announced: “Choose the good within, share boundless joy.”
Throughout this year Captains of School will lead the whole student body in a deeper understanding of this theme, and what it means in our daily lives and actions.
Together we congratulate our Year 12 students of 2015, and next week we look forward to welcoming back our recent graduates to the Dux of School Assembly, where we will not only congratulate the whole cohort most sincerely, but will also honour the Dux, Kaela Braue, the Duces of the individual subjects, students who received perfect subject scores, and other prize winners. Consistently, year after year, our students work hard to gain their fine results, and to maintain the standard of academic excellence and achievement for which we are known.
Most importantly I congratulate our students, new and ongoing, who have made such a good start to the School year. It is always a happy day when students return to School following a holiday; they are excited to see each other, and teachers look forward very much to meeting and working with their classes. With the Mandeville Centre now in full operation, there is an additional layer of excitement and optimism in all that the year will hold.
Thank you to the large number of parents in attendance at last night’s Parent Information Night, an important night to connect with home room teachers, to meet each other and to hear from our Guest Speaker for 2016, Associate Professor Michelle McQuaid. The talk presented at the information night continues our commitment to parent education in the field of positive psychology, with particular reference to how this discipline has been adopted in the Positive Education program of Loreto Toorak. In the coming weeks Loreto Toorak is particularly proud to host a series of parent education forums, aimed at educating parents about positive education, its place in the lives of your daughter at School and in the family, enabling understandings and strategies for more effective parenting. Parents are asked to register interest in attending these parent education workshops without delay, as places are filling fast. Click here for further information.
I look forward to seeing parents at two other forthcoming important functions, the Performing Arts Festival (PAF), on Monday 15 February, and the School cocktail party on Friday 19 February, in the forecourt of the Mansion. Bookings for these functions are still being received, so I encourage you to respond to Cathy Auld for the PAF by clicking
here and to the Development Office for the Cocktail Party by clicking
here if you have not already done so.
Yours sincerely
Dr Susan Stevens
Principal
