Today is World Refugee Day

There are 65 million forcibly displaced people in the world today; around 22.5 million of whom have been recognised as refugees.

Here in Australia whilst many refugees are resettled in our community and continue to make an extraordinary contribution to our society, many others are detained in limbo in centres offshore; still others are waiting years for protection visas, whilst having their access to work, health services and income support dramatically reduced.

Our Loreto Simply Sharing collection of food over the past 10 days is on behalf of the Foodbank at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre  in Footscray. The ASRC support hundreds of people who are seeking asylum with access to a Foodbank, material aid, a meals program, legal aid, health care and other support services. They also lobby the government for policy change.

During our Simply Sharing Mass yesterday we prayed for compassion, wisdom, kindness and hospitality from our political leaders in their response to refugees and asylum seekers; the generosity of the Loreto community in their contribution to Simply Sharing is a sign that our school “with open hearts, welcomes all to the table.” Sign the #withrefugees petition Support the World Refugee Day ASRC Telethon
