At Loreto Toorak, learning begins with strong foundations and a genuine love of discovery. In Rathfarnham, our junior school, students are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions and develop the confidence to explore the world around them. Through a rich and engaging curriculum, each student is supported to grow academically, socially, spiritually and emotionally.
The Rathfarnham curriculum is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and provides students from Preparatory to Year 6 with a broad, engaging and challenging learning experience. Through a balance of academic, creative, physical and spiritual learning opportunities, students develop strong foundations while building confidence and independence.
Students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Physical Education, Coding, The Arts and Languages. Learning is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills, preparing students for future success both within and beyond the classroom.
Language learning begins in Preparatory, with French taught from Preparatory to Year 4. In Year 5, students commence Chinese (Mandarin). During Year 6, students experience all four languages available in the Years 7 and 8 curriculum: Indonesian, Italian, French and Chinese (Mandarin). This broad exposure supports language development, cultural understanding and a seamless transition into secondary learning.
Strong literacy and numeracy foundations are central to the Rathfarnham learning experience.
In Preparatory to Year 2, literacy instruction is based on the Little Learners Love Literacy program. This evidence-based approach develops phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary knowledge, fluency and comprehension, helping students become confident and capable readers and writers. Additional support is available through the Individual Differences team, which draws on the Heggerty and Kilpatrick programs to provide targeted learning support where required.
In Mathematics, students strengthen their foundational numeracy skills through a variety of differentiated tasks and evidenced-based curriculum delivery.
Music is a vibrant and valued part of life at Loreto Toorak, with more than 600 students participating in weekly instrumental lessons and performing in bands, choirs, orchestras, chamber groups and ensembles.
All students study Music from Preparatory to Year 6, building creativity, confidence and performance skills from an early age.

A highlight of Year 6 is the student-led production. Students work collaboratively to create a performance from concept to stage, writing scripts, composing music, designing costumes and props, managing technical elements and presenting their work to family and friends. This immersive experience develops creativity, teamwork and confidence while celebrating the talents of every student.
The Rathfarnham curriculum is guided by the expertise of the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Rathfarnham Head of Teaching and Learning. Together with dedicated educators across all year levels, they ensure a cohesive, rigorous and connected educational journey from Preparatory to Year 12.

Technology is integrated thoughtfully throughout the Rathfarnham curriculum.
Students have access to their own laptop and use the School’s Learning Management System to access lesson materials, complete learning activities and submit work electronically. Alongside digital learning, traditional approaches remain highly valued. Handwriting, collaborative learning, discussion, practical experiences and the use of concrete materials continue to play an important role in student development.
This balanced approach ensures students develop strong digital literacy skills while maintaining meaningful human connection and hands-on learning experiences.
Leadership development is an important feature of the Year 6 experience at Loreto Toorak.
Every Year 6 student participates in a formal leadership program and belongs to one of six Councils. Through public speaking, presentations, committee work and collaborative projects, students develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
By leading initiatives and working alongside their peers, students discover how they can make a positive contribution to their community while developing the qualities of compassionate and authentic leadership.
As a Catholic School, Loreto Toorak is committed to nurturing the faith and spiritual development of every student.
Daily prayer, liturgical celebrations, faith formation experiences and social justice initiatives help students develop a strong sense of compassion, purpose and service. Through Religious Education, students deepen their understanding of faith while developing critical thinking skills and an appreciation for their role in the wider community.
Students also participate in the School-based sacramental program. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered in Year 3 and the Sacrament of First Eucharist is offered in Year 4. Students who join Loreto Toorak in later years are warmly welcomed to participate in these programs if they wish to receive the sacraments.
