At Loreto Toorak, our Junior School Mathematics program is designed to develop confident learners who see themselves as capable mathematicians.
In our all-girls environment, students are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and persist through challenges, building the confidence that is essential for success in science and mathematics.
Our program is grounded in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and delivered through a spiral approach, where key mathematical concepts are revisited and deepened over time. This allows students to consolidate foundational skills, make meaningful connections between ideas, and develop increasingly sophisticated reasoning. Mathematics is experienced as a connected discipline rather than a series of isolated topics, supporting both mastery and long-term understanding.

Opportunities for extension and enrichment are embedded within the program. Enrichment pathways allow students to explore Mathematics beyond the standard curriculum. At Year 5, students engage in open-ended problem solving and higher-order tasks designed to promote deep thinking and creativity. Participation in competitions is encouraged as part of our regular program, with select events forming part of the Enrichment Program. Stretch opportunities to apply learning in unfamiliar contexts and experience challenges in a supportive environment include:
- Computational Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition
- Australian Maths Competition
- Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge
- Kangourou sans Frontières
- Maths Challenge for Young Australians and
- Mathematics Olympiad
We place strong emphasis on differentiation to ensure every learner is appropriately supported and challenged. Targeted support groups provide scaffolded instruction for students to consolidate core skills, while in-class adjustments enable all students to access learning at their level. Ongoing assessment allows staff to respond to individual student needs with precision, in the areas support is needed, when it is needed.

Students are given the space to articulate their thinking and experience success, free from limiting stereotypes. They learn to approach challenges with resilience and to value both effort and achievement. We celebrate opportunities for students to share strategies, question ideas and engage collaboratively in problem solving.
