Be a Voice for Generations

The week before National Reconciliation Week, Murrundindi, Ngurungaeta of the Wurundjeri people, returned to our School and led a variety of cultural activities, presentations, and meetings with members of our community, including:

  • Teaching about Wurundjeri art, language, and symbols with our Rathfarnham students;
  • Speaking about the connection of land and country and the significance of being on land with our Year 9 students;
  • Sharing about song lines and passing down of culture with our VCE Psychology students; and
  • Leading an enriching ‘teach meet’ with our staff discussing the impact of colonisation on the landscape and keeping of sacred sites.

We thank Murrundindi for generously and wisely sharing his knowledge and stories with us.

Throughout Reconciliation Week, the School engaged with the meaning of this year's theme, “Be a Voice for Generations,” in our School prayers, classrooms, assemblies and in lunchtime activities. We celebrated the achievements made for reconciliation thus far and reflected on what more needs to be done together.

The community was invited to “put their hands up” for reconciliation and make their own pledge for action. These hands were displayed within our garden bed as a visible sign of the commitment of our students and staff to be a voice for generations.

While Reconciliation Week has come to an end, the work for reconciliation continues. As a Loreto school, we are committed to educating the hearts and minds of our students so that they can stand up for justice, healing, and reconciliation in our country. We celebrate and acknowledge the culture, stories, and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; those of the past, present and those generations to come.
