Exploring the Humanities through talks, games and mock trial

HumanitiesWeek_1

Our Humanities teachers worked hard to bring to our students a wide range of subject-themed activities over the past week. Activities during Humanities Week included visits from guest speakers Sophia Hanger and Hon. Jacinta Forbes QC, who shared about their career pathways, and a Loreto Toorak edition of Q+A addressing the upcoming federal election.

A feature of the week’s events was Race Around Loreto. Equipped with a booklet of clues, students tapped into their Geography knowledge to find hidden clues around the School grounds.

Another highlight occurred when our two Year 11 Legal Studies classes faced off against each other in a mock murder trial. Students applied their understanding of the elements of murder and the roles of the prosecution and defence by making oral arguments to a jury composed of former and current Year 12 Legal Studies students, including four members of the Class of 2021.

Students also engaged in the always-entertaining witness examination. The level of mooting shown by the students was exemplary and well beyond their years.

Students prepared their case under the guidance of their teachers Fil Cricri and Tom Watson. Special thanks to ‘Forewomen’ Renee Paxton and Louise McCarthy for their assistance in bringing this trial to life.
