Loreto Toorak Alumnae Christine and Ivy Nyugen, along with friend and co-founder, Will Kent passionately believe this, and have claimed it as their motto.
Christine and Ivy’s journey to create ReciMe, an online platform for sharing family recipes, began long ago when their parents used cooking as a tool to educate them about their Vietnamese background. Will is no stranger to cooking as his family used cooking and food to bring family and friends together for weekly gatherings.
In 2020, when the world halted due to the pandemic, the three co-founders began cooking up a storm in their kitchens. Christine and Ivy started writing down recipes passed down in their family for generations, while Will hopped on the bread-making train, perfecting his sourdough skills. It was a natural progression for them to share recipes and photos with friends and family, helping to maintain crucial social connections during the ongoing isolation. They soon realised the volume of family recipes that get lost from generation to generation, putting their heads together, saw an opportunity to create an app that shares and preserves recipes.
The idea of building a platform simmered gently as the three co-founders carried out their respective full-time jobs. Enlisting the support of three software engineers, Christine, Ivy and Will started building the app, and although neither had a background in tech, they designed and tested the app over the course of many evenings. After launching in November 2021, ReciMe now has over 1400 home cooks of all types, cuisines and skill levels connecting through their platform, and almost 2000 recipes. The dream doesn’t stop for the team; they share the ambitious goal of becoming the largest global recipe-sharing platform as well as helping to monetise those cooks who share their recipes.
Christine and Ivy’s Loreto Toorak education undoubtedly helped instil a sense of tenacity and determination. In creating the app, they produced a business model, covered value propositions, learnt new facets of technology, and faced challenges that presented in the building and testing stage of the app creation.
