GROUND BREAKING WORK FOR REFUGEES IN A NEW AREA

Loreto Toorak Alumna Emma Dunlevie (1993) is a lawyer and Principal at Russell Kennedy Lawyers doing ground-breaking work for refugees and in the relatively new area of climate law. Emma was recently a guest on the highly respected podcast, William & Lonsdale - Lives in the Law.

The podcast explores the legal ecosystem in Victoria and the fascinating people that make it tick and is produced by fellow Loreto Toorak Alumna and friend Catherine Green (1993). It’s a wonderful conversation that dives into Emma's school and university life, how she came to study law and the fascinating work she is doing now.

Since her youth, Emma had always been interested in the humanities, with a love for history and politics, and a passion for effecting change in society. She graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Honours degree of Bachelor of Arts (Politics). With a keen eye for the public policy aspect of law, she later went on to complete concurrently a Master of Development Studies at Uppsala University in Sweden, and a Master of Public Policy and Management at the University of Melbourne.

Refugee issues was the focus of Emma's thesis for her Master of Development Studies. Upon her return to Australia in 2005, she began volunteering at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, spending one evening a week for five years at their legal clinic.

From a case in the Tasmania Supreme Court during her articles, to a ground-breaking case that began with a distressed Afghan asylum-seeker showing up unannounced at Russell Kennedy’s office, Emma’s journey in law certainly inspires aspiring lawyers amongst our Loreto Toorak students and young Alumnae. Her work embodies the Loreto values of Freedom and Justice that are instilled in our students.
