THE YOUNGEST FEMALE AUSTRALIAN TO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST

Loreto Toorak Alumna, Gabrielle (Gabby) Kanizay (2021) has become the youngest female Australian to summit Mount Everest (8,848m).

At the age of 14, when Gabby’s father, Jarrod, asked what her goals are, her response came without hesitation: “I want to climb Everest!” Shortly after, Jarrod sent Gabby and her mother, Jane, to Base Camp.

This quick trip inspired Gabby and she embarked on years of training. Gabby’s climbs include Kala Patthar (5,643m), Mt. Kinabalu, Borneo (4,095m), Island Peak, Nepal (6,189m) in 2018.

In 2019 her training continued in Nepal with Mera Peak (6,400m) and Mt Baruntse  (6,200m). She finished the year with Cho Oyu (8,201m), where at just 16, became the youngest woman in the world to climb the world’s sixth highest peak.

Gabby’s years of determination and dedication have paid off, as she recently reached the summit of Everest on 14 May 2022 at 4.45am (Nepal time). Congratulations on such an impressive achievement!

Following her Everest Summit, Gabby immediately set her sights on Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain (8516m), and, on 15 May, just one day after Everest, Gabby reached the summit of Lhotse at 5.30am (Nepal Time). This marks Gabby’s third 8000m peak!

Gabby’s goal would not have been achieved without the support of her family, friends and climbing team encouraging and motivating her throughout her journey.
